Update Your Home On The Cheap

Is your home in need of an update? Does your piggy bank feel a bit light?? We all have those moments when we feel that our home - our sanctuary - is looking a bit outdated, or isn't making us feel inspired. It may seem that the only way to create a beautifully decorated space is to splash out hundreds or thousands of dollars - BUT that doesn't have to be the answer! I want to tell you my tips and tricks for creating decor magic without completely overhauling your home or having to drain all of your life savings.

Find inexpensive "on-trend" statement pieces

Check out discount retailers like Kmart or Big W, for cheap, "trendy" decor and furniture items that can be easily swapped out when the trend inevitably dies out. I recently bought this g-o-r-g-e-o-u-s baby pink velvet chair from Kmart for $49! This similar chair from Matt Blatt is over 20 times the price - imagine the amount of Starbucks fraps you could buy with the savings!!

Swap out your bedding

Refreshing your bedroom is as easy as changing up your bedding. I have two bedding sets which I change out every six months; a lighter and brighter floral quilt cover set for the Summer months, and a warm jewel toned, quilted design for the colder, Winter months.

Change up your framed pictures

Change out the picture frames around your home with photos that weren't taken over 10 years ago. Put up pictures that will make you smile before you leave for work each morning, whether they are from family get-togethers, coffee dates with the girls, the last concert you went to, or of your furry friend. Alternatively, print out some royalty free images, from sites like Unsplash, that match your home's style or adds a point of interest.

Add a pop of colour

It's currently Winter here in Australia, so when the weather is dreary I like to surround myself with lots of vibrant colours. Whether it’s from some fresh (or faux) flowers or even a cheap thrifted throw, it will reinvigorate your home, and make you feel much more cheerful. A simple way I do this in my kitchen, is by adding some citrus fruits -think lemons, limes and oranges - into a bowl or apothecary jar!

Bring nature indoors

Indoor plants have come onto the home decor scene in a BIG way. Everybody and their great aunt Tina is going crazy for some Fiddle Leaf Figs, Monsteras or an exotic palm - me included! Indoor plants are a great way to add life to your home, especially if you live in an apartment or don't have much of a backyard. If you've got any fur babies just make sure to check if the plant you choose is non-toxic, I had to opt for this faux Fiddle Fig as my cat has a penchant for sampling any live greenery I bring home.

Work with what you've got

If your funds are a little low, don't despair! You don't need to spend money to reinvent your home's style. I like to shop my home by rearranging different pieces from different areas around the house. Unleash your inner DIY goddess, and use what you have to create something new and fabulous. If you're a crafting newbie, there are so many resources on the internet that will inspire you and guide you along the way - don't feel intimidated, just have fun!
